Adam Beane Industries provides the materials and techniques you need to create amazing sculptures. ABI was founded to bring the revolutionary sculpting materials Cx5h and Cx5s, invented by renowned master sculptor Adam Beane, to sculptors worldwide.
The essential element of great sculpture
Cx5h is a premium sculpting material designed to be used in place of sculpting clays, finish waxes, and prototyping plastics. It is a non-toxic temperature sensitive material that handles like clay when warm, finishes like wax, and is as hard as plastic when cool. Cx5h is the hardest sculpting material available. It holds incredible detail and is idea for mechanical features and jointing. Cx5h has a very hard finished surface, and is polishable to the highest shine. Cx5h and Cx5s have different sculpting properties but are the same weight and the same opaque gray color - they can be mixed to create a medium hardness. Together, Cx5h and Cx5s form a complete sculpting system where you can truly mix your own medium. Cx5h is the ideal material for every stage of your project, from roughing out and building up, to adding fine details, machined features and a high polish. Cx5h is self supporting and does not need an armature, even at large sizes. Mold and cast your finished Cx5h sculpture in various materials. Each bar comes with instructions.
The softer side of Cx5
Cx5s is a premium sculpting material designed to be used in place of sculpting clays, finish waxes, and prototyping plastics. It is a non-toxic temperature sensitive material that handles like clay when warm, finishes like wax, and is as hard as plastic when cool. Cx5s is the soft version of Cx5h, and when heated remains workable by hand for an extraordinarily long time. Cx5s can be tooled at room temperature with metal tools. Cx5h and Cx5s have different sculpting properties but are the same weight and the same opaque gray color - they can be mixed to create a medium hardness. Together, Cx5h and Cx5s form a complete sculpting system where you can truly mix your own medium. Cx5s is the ideal material for every stage of your project, from roughing out and building up, to adding fine details and a high polish. Cx5s is self supporting and does not need an armature, even at large sizes. Mold and cast your finished Cx5s sculpture in various materials. Each bar comes with instructions.
A clean flame for hot sculpting
This alcohol lamp is an indispensable tool for applying direct heat to any Cx5 sculpture. The wick is extra thick with an internal core to give you a bigger, brighter flame than most alcohol lamps, making it the perfect lamp for heating areas of your Cx5 sculpture quickly and evenly. Use the snuffer cap to put out the flame whenever it is not in use, and use only denatured alcohol in your alcohol lamp, as it is the only fuel that burns without soot.
The ultimate tool for hot sculpting
This waxer is the best tool for working in Cx5 and Cx5s and provides instant, accurate heat through cast metal tips. Once you have your Cx5 sculpture roughed out, you will want to refine the shapes and add detail. Turn the temperature up high on a large tip to melt and move large amounts of material quickly, switch to a smaller tip and turn the temperature down to sculpt fine details. This waxer comes with the two essential tips for sculpting: the Small Denture tip and the Beane Detailing tip. The Small Denture tip is a spatula shape that lifts and places material accurately, as well as being able to carve and smooth large areas. The Beane Detailing tip is a heavily modified 1/2 Hollenback tip with the same precision angles, points and surfaces that Adam Beane has been using for years to create incredibly detailed work in Cx5. When bought from other locations, this waxer comes with two tips that are are standard for the dental industry, but are not useful for sculpting (as they cannot move material or really do anything other than make small holes).
The best way to smooth your sculpture
3M Softback Sanding Sponges are heat resistant and come in Superfine grit, in packs of three. Used in conjunction with a heat source (a flame provided by an alcohol lamp and denatured alcohol) they are ideal for smoothing and shaping Cx5 sculptures. Hot-sanding techniques are used for knocking down large areas of rough sculpture and also for smoothing in fine details. These sponges are heat resistant and can be gently heated over an alcohol lamp, however they were not manufactured for this purpose. Customers assume all risk when using sanding sponges for hot-sculpting. Never heat a sponge up until it smokes, and always make sure to use caution and have a fire extinguisher near by when working with open flame.
Convenient and accurate
A key to sculpting in Cx5 is knowing what the temperature of your material is. This easy read digital thermometer is accurate to ±1 degree at temperatures from -20°C~200°C (-4°F~392°F)and ±2 degrees at other temperature ranges. Insert it directly into Cx5 or Cx5s to get an accurate reading of the sculpting material and eliminate guess work. This thermometer gives an instant reading, is waterproof, has a hold function, and an auto-off function to save battery life. You can replace the battery with a LR44 or AG13 if it runs out. The metal probe is easy to clean with a short pass over an alcohol lamp to remove any residual Cx5. The ideal temperature for sculpting in Cx5 is 125°F / 52°C.
Sculpting Tutorial Series: Number 1
Working in Cx5: An introduction to materials, tools & techniques
This first video will introduce you to everything Cx5 can do, and show you how to work with it using Adam's specific techniques. Learn everything about using Cx5 at different temperatures, how to begin a figure sculpture or create a model from machined Cx5 parts, and many ways to achieve different textures and finishes. Perfect for beginning or experienced sculptors new to Cx5, and those sculpting for the first time. Lessons focus on techniques specific to Cx5 and also explain the fundamentals of professional sculpting. Although this video is specific to Cx5h, the techniques are all applicable to Cx5s with the following caveats; the modeling techniques are actually easier in Cx5s because of its longer working time, while the machining techniques are easier in Cx5 because it is harder at room temperature.
